Davao City stands as a gateway to the rich cultural tapestry of Mindanao, where diversity in faith, traditions, and artistry converge. Among its many treasures are the indigenous handwoven textiles that reflect the soul of its communities: the vibrant Inabal of the Bagobo-Tagabawa, the intricate Kudamanof the Ata Manobo, and the meaningful Dagmay of the Mandaya. These are just a glimpse into the living legacy of craftsmanship that unites us as Davaoeños and Filipinos.
Recognizing the beauty of these traditions, Cebu Pacific, the Philippines’ leading airline, has launched an initiative that weaves culture into the travel experience. Aptly named QR Flight Codes, this campaign highlights the artistry of local weavers while promoting Philippine tourism. As Davaoeños, this initiative hits close to home, celebrating the very traditions that define our identity.
Weaving the Past into the Future
Our officers and members of the Davao Bloggers Society had the honor of attending the launch event, where Cebu Pacific unveiled the QR Flight Codes. This program, in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), shines a spotlight on the intricate weaves of Filipino communities.
These QR Flight Codes represent five iconic textiles from different regions:
• Binakol (Ilocos Norte): Known for its intricate, nature-inspired patterns.
• Ramit (Occidental Mindoro): Renowned for its elegantly colored stripes.
• Hablon (Iloilo): Famous for its bright hues and plaid designs.
• Patadyong (Antique): Notable for its bold and colorful checkered patterns.
• Yakan (Zamboanga): Striking with geometric patterns and vivid colors.
Scanning these QR codes, placed on billboards, airports, and magazines, unlocks the stories behind the textiles and highlights tourist attractions in their places of origin. Through this innovative campaign, travelers are invited to connect with the history and significance of Filipino weaving traditions.
Supporting Local Weaving Communities
Cebu Pacific’s collaboration with local weaving communities ensures the preservation of their stories and crafts. Among its partners are:
• The Paoay Weavers of Ilocos Norte, supported by Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU).
• The Hanunuo Mangyan of Occidental Mindoro, through the Awati Ti Kape Community Development Program.
• The Baraclayan Weavers Association of Iloilo.
• The Patnongon Multipurpose Cooperative and BagtasonLoom Weavers Association of Antique.
• The Yakan weavers of Zamboanga, supported by Oriental Weaves and MMSU.
This partnership ensures that these communities benefit from the visibility and support that the QR Flight Codes initiative brings.
